Some days ago I was thinking to post about a fact that my weblog is becoming similar to the tumblelog, but I didn't. Today I found a great service/website called tumbler which allows us to create tumblelogs. I immediately created a/my tumblelog. If you don't know what tumblelog is, you can hit wikipedia for tumblelog. I always liked project.ioni.st which is a fabulous tumblelog.

The site seems to be built with Ruby on Rails, as it is created by some Davidville Inc which has a product named senduit (which is built on Rails :) ). senduit is very good and simple to use.

One thing my weblog will now(from now) have long posts written by me instead of just links and quotes by other people, all these will now be the part my tumblelog.

Additionally, I am writing this post with/on VIM as now I have found a nice/cool/sexy firefox extension named "It's All Text!" which allows to edit any textarea on web with VIM, when you "wq" it will be added to the text area on the desired site. Do try it!

My favorite editor VIM's creator Bram gave presentation on VIM called "Seven habits of effective text editing 2.0" at Google, Mountain View (Bram works for Google, Zürich). I am right now downloading the video which is a part of Google Techtalks / SpeakerSeries OpenSourceDevelopers.
Few days ago, when I read this news, I was sure that Google will host the video of presentation on Google's video. After the date of Bram's presentation, as an excitement I searched Google Video for the presentation two-three times, but that video was not available
But today I saw that, Bram himself posted the news about the presentation video on here also on vimannounce yahoo group here.

Woot!
I successfully tried to imitate the Premshree's Personal Weblog's theme. This was my third try in the year. Two times I could not successfully imitate the theme. Today, I thought to again imitate it. Just with some luck, I made it. Now my blog looks somewhat similar to Premshree's. I am not very good at CSS. but I understand it and can hack at any level.
I liked the Rubyishness of Premshree's blog. I always wanted to have similar looking blog (As I am inspired by his blogging, and blogging style). I already started liking brownish red color of Ruby. Many Ruby websites and blogs use it excessively. I could not resist myself using it.
Reading and writing to such Rubyish blog is very inspiring to me than the typical style regular colored/themed blogs.

The year 2006 was very different for me. It's one of the ultimate years in my life. 2006 was a turning point year of my life too. Lots of things happened. It's difficult to write about all the nice things.
Mainly
I graduated to become a Bachelor of Computer Engineering from Pune University.
I did my final year BE project sponsored by Patni Computers, Pune.
I will never forget Satish Sir for his invaluable help and guidance.
I found Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
I got my first job.
I worked on first live project.
I got chance to work with great people, specially Shashank Sir.
We bought a house in Pune(previously we were living in Govt quarters).
My final academic year 2005-2006 was fastest and busiest year in my whole life, but after that year 2006 was comparatively relaxed and enthusiastic.
Now I am more happy welcoming 2007 as I am working on building the next big thing in MangoSpring with my favorite programming language and technology.
Happy New Year 2007!

Attended BarCamp Pune 2

I just came to my home after attending the fantastic BarCamp Pune 2. It was a very nice event again. All the talks were awesome. I liked the talk of Jon the most. His topic was "Architectures for scalable web applications in Ruby/Rails". Second talk I liked was of Brajeshwar and Abdul from Nanocast. They demonstarted features of Nanocast, the next big thing! I just checked and registered for Amazon's new service UnSpun (unspun.amazon.com). It's a rails application sitting on Amazon.com domain. Adam Selipsky from Amazon Web Services describes the UnSpun as

Top reasons are it's a new concept, it's having only those things which are necessary, good, intuitive GUI, it's social, it's built on Ruby on Rails, Powered by amazon.

Do check out http://planetrubyonrails.com. My friend Pratik has developed a very nice rails application which aggregates xml feeds of various rails blogs and websites. You can try specific keyword search like http://rjs.planetrubyonrails.com as dynamic subdomains searching is enabled. Black background posts are the ones which we should never miss.

Pratik has started his own company thinkwares few months back. He and his team are developing some of the very cool in house web applications and they also work on client projects.

To me, Pratik is a very inspiring guy. He is very much devoted to his work. I like his passion for Ruby on Rails.
Pratik is the guy who gave me first free Ruby on Rails hosting with his FreeonRails.com, also he gave me free domain name too. He has also provided me free space on his server Rails.in.

It helped me a lot in trying out various rails miniprojects live as a website. I got hands on experience of deploying the rails applications on servers, maintaining them and try some of the unusual things.

I definitely like to call it that because we care about the whole experience. We care about putting a complete stack together. We care about sorting out all of those problems that usually fall between the cracks. I think that the Apple and especially the IPod example are such perfect examples on how you can introduce something like a dumb USB stick, like the Shuffle and make it a huge success because it's part of the complete stack. It would be a complete failure if it weren't part of the Apple environment. I think we can do the same things with a lot of tiny optimizations that seem inconsequential, but when they are seen across the whole stack, just like the stuff we are doing with Ajax now, it matters because we can control the whole level up. It's not just about shipping a JavaScript Library, it's about shipping a JavaScript Library that has hooks into the template language, that has hooks into how the controller operates, that has some general notions of how you are actually dealing with your model. By creating each of the individual parts, knowing how the rest of the world looks you can usually do something that is a lot more targeted and seemingly coherent, than if you're just working with your shutters on, on one single thing.

I got false for various require before when I did require 'something' in irb.
But while I was on IRC, dagbrown replied to my question

<dagbrown> I'm shocked that nobody has noticed that if you say require "something" and it returns false, all that means is that it's already been required.

I wasn't aware of precise reason..why require returns false.

TextMate snippets for RadRails

I was always fascinated about TextMate. I have read huge material on TextMate editor. You must have seen TextMate if you have seen these screencasts of Rails.
Now you can get the goodness of TextMate on Windows, Dr. Nic has ported TextMate snippet libraries over RadRails. It's not very same as TextMate but it's a $3000 cheaper. So do check it out.

BarCamp Pune 2

When I started the idea of BarCamp Pune(first) in March of this year, I never thought that it would become a very successful event and get publicity all over world. I am always interested in organizing and taking part in any BarCamp. Due to my final semester's exams, I could not make it to take part in organizing this event. But I attended the BarCamp Pune. It was a memorable event.

Switched to new internet ISP

Today, I switched to Golden Tiger Telecom Pvt. Ltd for my internet connection. Before that I was using Airtel GPRS for accessing the internet. I can't imagine the world without internet now. It's a necessary thing!
My plan is 64Kbps unlimited download for 30 days. I found this plan economical and worth of my needs!
I am thinking of launching some useful webpages using googlepages offcourse for adsense and public(software) interest! I have various ideas in my mind! My Airtel GPRS was so slow that I was unable to open pages.google.com for editing! Now it's got better, I am able edit it!

Ruby programming language now can be called as mainstream programming language. If you are still not sure, checkout the site http://www.tiobe.com/tpci.htm according to which Ruby now got the 13th position from top. I liked Ruby always and still prefer Java for enterprise level. Java has continued to maintain the top position and will remain there for years to come. I am sure that Ruby will gain the position in coming months and prove its strength as a mainstream language. From Bloglines to Google Reader

Recently I read an article on Lifehacker which is one of my favorite sites. Article titled From Bloglines to Google Reader. I was really impressed from the article and I exported my Bloglines feeds to opml file and imported it into Bloglines and the magic started. The current Google Reader is so nice that I fell love with it. I liked the List view too much.

I think my blog looks like one of dedicated Google blog. But that is not the case. I post the articles about the things that fascinates me. Google is the thing which continuously fascinating me from last 4 years. Hats off to Google.

Yesterday Google unveiled its new search service Google Code Search. It's a very great and revolutionary service as you can type regular expressions as query and find the code all over the net. I liked this service too much. I searched using numerous regular expressions as my queries. The search results sometimes gives you some unexpected results seeing which your joy will know no bounds. Kottke has some nice hacks to do with Google Code Search, see the link. I am also going to post some nice queries in my next post.

Some days ago oreilly has launched some similar service which searches codes from oreilly books, see the link.

Some interesting things which make me busy

Today I opened my netvibes homepage and found that it is nicely improved. Looks are damn fine. All functionalities are quite working. awesome! Also Some extra functionalities are added which makes it a complete web app. There are some nice features and which are so well created that I am not finding words to describe it. It made my day!

Also I found a site which lists some free cool programs which are less than 2MB. I was using some of them for very long time. I also want to introduce them to you all.

µTorrent The coolest torrent client which I use regularly size is just 170KB.
NetStat Live TCP/IP protocol monitor which can be used to see your exact throughput on both incoming and outgoing data. I find this program very useful.
PuTTY PuTTY is a free implementation of Telnet and SSH for Win32 and Unix. I haven't used other SSH client after I found PuTTY. Great piece of software.
Foxit Reader When I first saw it, it made my day. It is free reader for PDF (Portable Document Format) documents. I always keep it in my USB flash drive.

I am a great fan of Nintendo games, when I was 14 years old, I used to play various TV games using my 8 bit Nitendo Game box. I had a nice collection of various 8 bit games cartridges(I call cassettes) some of them are Mario, Contra, Road Fighter. Today I found a website which has all such games available to play online as a applet with the same music. The link to the site is http://vnes.thatsanderskid.com/ . I played some of the games on it. It loads/emulates Nintendo games on the browser with Java. So Java must be installed.

I always post my posts on my blog with some third party tools such as Blogjet, Semagic. But for some reasons I was not able to post my posts on blog using these tools. I was in search of a nice program/software which will do this task in a very efficient manner and I found Windows Live Writer. This is a very nice software by Microsoft. It is still in beta and I recommend it to download because it's more than worth downloading.

I also updated my resume/cv. I added its link to my blog. Also revamped my homepage, added links to various websites and online services which I use. I also started enjoying writing for my blogger blog!!! ;)

My friend Pratik suggested me to start using mephisto. Mephisto is a blogging/content management software created by Rick Olson(technoweenie) of the Ruby On Rails Core team and Justin Palmer. I am in love with Rick’s apps. I like Beast. I like Rails Pastie. I like mephisto. I had some conversation with Rick via #mephisto channel on IRC. He is very helpful and guided me to setup my mephisto on my server. I got this server from Pratik. I refered Pratik’s tip to install mephisto on shared hosting environment. But in vain, it required a different trick to setup mephisto on my server. I hope I will setup mephisto on server in couple of days. I will announce it on blog. ;)

Yup! I am leaving blogging at Blogger! But not fully! I have created my new weblog at http://anilw.info/blog/. My new blog is powered with Ruby on Rails. I have used Typo as a blogging software. Typo is a free, open source blogging software built on Ruby on Rails.

I was blogging on Blogger since December 2004. Blogger have provided me various opportunities. I learned various things while blogging. I am the person who know the importance of blogging. Like everybody has its email id, mobile number, I feel everybody should have a blog/weblog.

As I said I am not fully quitting Blogger, I will try to clone my posts from http://anilw.info/blog/ to my Blogger blog. But I am not sure wheather I will use blogger in my future. Actually, I have decided to use only open source softwares. I will not use any service or any software which is against open source. I am an open source fanatic. For certain conditions I have to use Windows at my home. But I am fully in the process of quitting Windows as my OS. I hope it will happen as soon as possible. These days I find, Ubuntu as a fantastic OS. Ubuntu is based on Debian, which makes it really the best.

Also, today I changed the look of my blogger blog, just because some of my friends told me that your blog is not rendered properly in Internet Explorer. I am so used to Firefox that I dont open Internet Explorer for days.

I promise you that you will see various nice things related to Ruby coding in my fresh blog. Update your feeds and your links.

BarCamp Pune! A great experience!

I attended BarCamp Pune. It was a very very exciting event! This was the first BarCamp in Pune. All the talks were excellent. With this event, I got chance to meet many bloggers and techie people. Many speakers and campers came from various cities. Planners planned BarCamp excellently! People shared their knowledge with each others! One of the camper, Shailesh Khandekar took my interview while we were having lunch. He was blogging the interview live. you can check the interview here. Many campers also live blogged the event. You can search about BarCamp Pune on Google Blogsearch. I think BarCamp is really the great concept!

BASH HOTKEYS I use

Bash provides many hot keys to ease use. Like

ctrl-l -- clear screen
ctrl-r -- does a search in the previously given commands so that you don't have to repeat long command.
ctrl-u -- clears the typing before the hotkey.
ctrl-a -- takes you to the beginning of the command you are currently typing.
ctrl-e -- takes you to the end of the command you are currently typing in.
esc-b -- takes you back by one word while typing a command.
ctrl-c -- kills the current command or process.
ctrl-d -- kills the shell.
ctrl-h -- deletes one letter at a time from the command you are typing in.
ctrl-z -- puts the currently running process in background, the process can be brought back to run state by using fg command.
esc-p -- like ctrl-r lets you search through the previously given commands.
esc-. -- gives the last command you typed.

These proved extremely useful for me.

I am creating a Social Bookmarks Manager as my BE project! I have created some part of it! While explaining the concept of Social Bookmarks Manager to my friends and teachers, I always show del.icio.us! I help them to create their account on del.icio.us. They post some links. They understand tags concept! Some of them like the site. But the common problem for all is that they forget del.icio.us’s link! The Rashmi Sinha experienced the same! She wrote “What delicious irony in that the url we use to remember our other urls is so hard to remember. Its almost as if some of the mental energy freed up by offloading all other urls is taken up by remembering how to spell del.icio.us. Its the del.icio.us tax! I for one am glad to pay it.”

del.icio.us have started private bookmarking feature. It is still in beta. I am a regular user of del.icio.us, I think the power of del.icio.us is in social bookmarking, means all your bookmarks are public. Anyone can see anybody others bookmarks. So with the help of this we get collective effort of people and discover many new links which are really too useful. But now allowing users to privately bookmark the sites, it is not possible. Now person will not share an illegal link or any sensitive link. Discovery of such links is in danger. But from users’ point of view, private bookmarking is attractive. There were many users who were not using del.icio.us for lack of private bookmarking feature. I also had some bookmarks which I did not want to share with anybody. Now, I have made them private. It is a very big step from del.icio.us.
